The Gateway Process is closely associated with the Monroe Institute, a research and educational organization known for its work in the field of human consciousness. The Monroe Institute developed the Gateway Process as a part of its exploration into the use of audio technology to alter consciousness and facilitate meditation.

The Gateway Process draws heavily from the institute's research on binaural beats, a technique that uses audio tones played at slightly different frequencies in each ear to create a perceived third tone. This third tone, known as a binaural beat, is believed to synchronize brainwaves and facilitate a meditative state.
